Willard Hackerman, president and CEO of the Whiting-Turner Company, earned a civil engineering degree at Johns Hopkins University in 1938 and was a supporter of Johns Hopkins throughout his lifetime. As a university trustee, he led the effort to reestablish the university's standalone engineering school in 1979 and was instrumental in securing the school-naming gift for his mentor, G.W.C. Whiting.
With the encouragement of family, friends and map dealers, in just fifteen years Willard assembled a remarkable collection of Maryland and Baltimore maps. Following his death in 2014, Lillian P. Hackerman, his wife of 72 years, along with their daughter, Nancy Hackerman, carried out Willard's bequest that his map collection become part of the Sheridan Libraries at Johns Hopkins University.
Scanning and cataloging of the Hackerman Map Collection was completed in 2020 through the generosity of Nancy Hackerman.
