Maps and Atlases Collections

The maps and atlases collections at Johns Hopkins also includes a large collection of historic maps and atlases for counties and cities within the State of Maryland, and the most comprehensive collection of Baltimore City maps and atlases found anywhere. Series include topographical maps, aerial photography, historic atlases, and urban planning proposals, including the Hackerman Map Collection and collections created by the Maryland Geological Survey.

Historical Atlases

This collection includes images from over twenty atlas volumes with coverage for seventeen Maryland counties, 1973 to 2008. Some atlases include more than one county. No historical atlases were published for Alleghany Co., Calvert Co., Charles Co., Garrett Co., Harford Co., and St. Mary’s Co.

Baltimore City Sheet Maps

Historical sheet maps of Baltimore city produced in the 1800s and 1900s, including industrial surveys, sewerage surveys, neighborhood development plans, population maps, public trainsit routes, and more.

Baltimore County Sheet Maps

Maps of Baltimore County, including highway and soil maps, topographic surveys, and Bromley's 1915 "Atlas of Baltimore County, Maryland."

Baltimore Development Plans

This collection includes selected development plans from Baltimore City and the Baltimore Regional Planning Council, 1926-present. Plans address various urban issues such as land use, transportation, and development.

Hackerman Map Collection

Materials from the collection of Willard Hackerman '38, university trustee, engineer, and CEO of the Whiting-Turner Company. This collection includes colonial era maps of Maryland, Virginia, and the Carolinas, charts of the Chesapeake Bay, and 1800s era lithographic images of Baltimore City.

Maryland Counties Sheet Maps

Historical sheet maps of Anne Arundel, Allegany, Calvert, Caroline, Carroll, Cecil, Charles, Dorchester, Frederick, Garrett, Harford, Howard, Kent, Montgomery, Prince George's, Queen Anne's, Somerset, St. Mary's, Talbot, Washington, Wicomico, and Worchester counties. Produced in the 1800s and 1900s, these include topological surveys, election districts, and geological formations.

Maryland State Sheet Maps

The Maryland State Sheet maps collection includes historical colonial maps, geological and topographical surveys, soil maps, highway maps, and more. A majority of the materials were produced by the Maryland Geological Survey in the 1900s.

Baltimore Aerial Photography

Aerial photographs of Baltimore City and County produced by the the Maryland Geological Survey, 1924-1925, 1927, 1937-1938, 1948, 1952-1953, 1957, 1964, and 1972.

The digital materials featured here are a subset of the full collection, which can currently be viewed on our Institutional Repository website, JScholarship. We are working to migrate the collection in its entirity to this site by Fall 2026.
