00:00:02.500 - 00:00:09.780

K.D.: Okay, this is Kristen Diehl here with J.G. on March 30th, 2026 at the Brody

00:00:09.780 - 00:00:14.120

K.D.: Learning Commons for the first generation/FLI college student oral

00:00:14.120 - 00:00:19.640

K.D.: history interview. So, hello, thank you for speaking with me today. To start us

00:00:19.640 - 00:00:23.560

K.D.: off, could you tell me where you were born and a bit about your family?

00:00:23.560 - 00:00:23.960

J.G.: Yeah, I

00:00:23.960 - 00:00:28.260

J.G.: was born in San Antonio, Texas. I lived there my whole life until I came to

00:00:28.400 - 00:00:35.380

J.G.: Hopkins, when I moved to Hopkins. I have two brothers, one older, one younger. The

00:00:35.380 - 00:00:58.380

J.G.: younger one is 18 years old and the older one is 26. I hope I did my math correctly because he was

00:00:58.380 - 00:01:04.740

J.G.: born November 23, 1997. I live with my mother and father. My mom is, okay, I'm not going to do the math. She was

00:01:04.740 - 00:01:16.400

J.G.: born on May 19th, 1974 and my father was born on January 23rd, 1971.

00:01:16.400 - 00:01:17.600

K.D.: What do your

00:01:17.600 - 00:01:21.300

K.D.: parents do for a living? What are their occupations or professions?

00:01:21.300 - 00:01:22.220

J.G.: My dad works

00:01:22.220 - 00:01:30.860

J.G.: as an insurance salesman for USAA and my mother used to work in the banking/

00:01:30.860 - 00:01:40.180

J.G.: finance industry. I can't remember how long ago, but in the late 2000s to early

00:01:41.060 - 00:01:45.980

J.G.: 2010s, she underwent several back surgeries and she's actually on

00:01:45.980 - 00:01:50.260

J.G.: disability as of now because she cannot work in an actual office space anymore.

00:01:50.260 - 00:01:56.420

J.G.: But her last job was at Firstmark.

00:01:56.420 - 00:01:58.740

K.D.: And can you tell me a little bit more about your

00:01:58.740 - 00:02:01.220

K.D.: parents' educations?

00:02:01.220 - 00:02:05.740

J.G.: So my father has a bachelor's degree, a bachelor's of

00:02:05.740 - 00:02:12.240

J.G.: science in biology and my mother, her highest education was a high school

00:02:12.240 - 00:02:16.940

J.G.: diploma. She got some college education, but she never actually

00:02:16.940 - 00:02:21.260

J.G.: completed a degree.

00:02:21.260 - 00:02:27.440

K.D.: What were the town – San Antonio, what was that like

00:02:27.440 - 00:02:30.500

K.D.: growing up? What were your impressions of it?

00:02:30.500 - 00:02:31.500

J.G.: To be honest, it's kind of hard to

00:02:31.500 - 00:02:34.120

J.G.: answer this question because it's kind of one of those things like it was the

00:02:34.120 - 00:02:37.700

J.G.: only thing I knew growing up until I came to Baltimore to see such big

00:02:37.700 - 00:02:45.160

J.G.: differences. It was a very drivable city. It's still a very drivable city. I always

00:02:45.160 - 00:02:48.880

J.G.: loved it because I always loved the heat, which is crazy because some people

00:02:48.880 - 00:02:55.840

J.G.: don't like the heat. I don't know, to me having, funny enough, to me, having

00:02:55.840 - 00:03:00.420

J.G.: temperatures over 90 degrees is very nostalgic for me. Some people actually

00:03:00.420 - 00:03:08.120

J.G.: hate it. I don't like it per se because it's heat, but I still love the memories

00:03:08.120 - 00:03:14.580

J.G.: that I get from having, you know, hanging out with friends in the summer, you know,

00:03:14.580 - 00:03:16.300

J.G.: just doing fun things in the summer.

00:03:22.160 - 00:03:25.180

J.G.: I'm trying to think of any other things about San Antonio.

00:03:25.180 - 00:03:25.980

K.D.: Did you guys live

00:03:25.980 - 00:03:28.720

K.D.: closer to downtown or more in the suburbs?

00:03:28.720 - 00:03:30.740

J.G.: We lived more in the suburbs. We

00:03:30.740 - 00:03:33.020

J.G.: lived on what's called the far west side.

00:03:33.020 - 00:03:36.620

K.D.: Okay.

00:03:36.620 - 00:03:38.300

J.G.: It's – funny enough, it's one of the

00:03:38.300 - 00:03:42.720

J.G.: more, I don't want to say affluent because it's not, but it's one of the, I would say, the

00:03:42.720 - 00:03:50.360

J.G.: less poor regions of San Antonio, which is kind of crazy because there's

00:03:50.360 - 00:03:54.360

J.G.: actually a slight divide for me because here at Hopkins, I'm considered FLI,

00:03:54.920 - 00:03:59.220

J.G.: non-affluent, yet in San Antonio, compared to my friends at the very least,

00:03:59.220 - 00:04:05.820

J.G.: I'm considered, I'll say more affluent than them. Some of my friends have it

00:04:05.820 - 00:04:11.060

J.G.: worse than me, which leaves me in this really weird position of like, I'm

00:04:11.060 - 00:04:15.640

J.G.: considered not rich here, but then in San Antonio, I'm considered not poor in

00:04:15.640 - 00:04:18.580

J.G.: San Antonio. So I'm in this really weird gray zone.

00:04:18.580 - 00:04:20.100

K.D.: Yeah. Kind of navigating…

00:04:20.100 - 00:04:20.300

J.G.: Yeah. 'Cause

00:04:20.300 - 00:04:29.980

J.G.: like my mother and father, they didn't, they didn't want me to be poor,

00:04:29.980 - 00:04:34.560

J.G.: if that makes sense. They grew up poor. And so they didn't want their children,

00:04:34.560 - 00:04:39.300

J.G.: me, to ever have, you know, the worry of, "Oh, there's no food on the table. Oh, where

00:04:39.300 - 00:04:42.620

J.G.: are we going to sleep tonight," 'cause that's what they experienced. But at the

00:04:42.620 - 00:04:45.520

J.G.: same time here, I'm worried about how am I going to pay for books? How am I going to pay

00:04:45.520 - 00:04:49.320

J.G.: for this? How am I going to pay for that? While other students here are not worried

00:04:49.320 - 00:04:51.000

J.G.: about that.

00:04:51.000 - 00:04:53.420

K.D.: Are your parents also from San Antonio?

00:04:53.420 - 00:04:55.680

J.G.: Yes. But my grandparents are

00:04:55.680 - 00:04:58.060

J.G.: actually from Mexico.

00:04:58.060 - 00:05:00.640

K.D.: Okay. And when did they move to the US?

00:05:00.640 - 00:05:06.120

J.G.: They actually can't remember. All I know is that they moved when they were

00:05:06.120 - 00:05:12.140

J.G.: children because their great-grandparents, their great- grandparents,

00:05:12.140 - 00:05:16.880

J.G.: their parents, my great-grandparents, they lived during the time of the Mexican

00:05:16.880 - 00:05:23.420

J.G.: revolution and they didn't want to stay there. So they moved from Mexico to the

00:05:23.420 - 00:05:27.240

J.G.: United States when my grandparents were younger. They don't remember the exact

00:05:27.240 - 00:05:31.220

J.G.: age. I've asked them several times. They just say when they were kids.

00:05:31.220 - 00:05:31.820

K.D.: What was

00:05:31.820 - 00:05:38.900

K.D.: your high school experience like? Any favorite classes, extracurriculars, or any sports

00:05:38.900 - 00:05:40.360

K.D.: or hobbies?

00:05:40.360 - 00:05:42.840

J.G.: So I can get some of the things out of the way. I never did sports.

00:05:42.840 - 00:05:50.420

J.G.: I was always a nerd. So I never did any sports. I didn't do any jobs either. And

00:05:50.420 - 00:05:55.220

J.G.: that was simply because I knew I couldn't balance it. And also my parents,

00:05:55.220 - 00:05:59.460

J.G.: again, they didn't want me to worry about having to pay for things. And so they

00:05:59.460 - 00:06:02.540

J.G.: always reminded me, you know, "If you get a job, it's not going to be helping to

00:06:02.540 - 00:06:09.380

J.G.: pay, you know, bills. It's going to be your own money." So my favorite class, but

00:06:09.380 - 00:06:12.560

J.G.: I'll start off with the most more general thing. My high school experience

00:06:12.560 - 00:06:17.480

J.G.: was very, actually was during COVID. So it was actually pretty exciting before

00:06:17.480 - 00:06:27.160

J.G.: COVID. And then it got really tiresome after—during COVID and after COVID. So

00:06:27.160 - 00:06:32.420

J.G.: my favorite classes were actually AP classes, which are hard, especially AP

00:06:32.420 - 00:06:38.460

J.G.: Psychology. AP Psychology made me realize I want to major in psychology. And then

00:06:38.460 - 00:06:44.060

J.G.: the AP Research and AP Seminar, which are the two classes

00:06:44.060 - 00:06:49.560

J.G.: for AP Capstone program, made me realize that I actually want to do research in

00:06:50.160 - 00:06:56.660

J.G.: my career. I've actually done research here. But some extracurriculars, I was

00:06:56.660 - 00:07:01.880

J.G.: part of NHS and I was also a part of Psi Alpha, which is a psychology honor

00:07:01.880 - 00:07:11.420

J.G.: society, I believe for high schoolers. I can't remember if I did any

00:07:11.420 - 00:07:16.480

J.G.: academic programs that are like programs you apply to and actually did. This was

00:07:16.480 - 00:07:19.020

J.G.: actually one of the harder things that I was worried about when applying to

00:07:19.020 - 00:07:22.680

J.G.: places like Hopkins, because I was—I couldn't afford to, you know, stay over

00:07:22.680 - 00:07:27.260

J.G.: at a college just when I was a high schooler just to get, you know, some form

00:07:27.260 - 00:07:33.020

J.G.: of credit. I couldn't also do, you know, summer programs, you know, doing research

00:07:33.020 - 00:07:37.900

J.G.: because then that also costs money. And so once again, I was always worried about,

00:07:37.900 - 00:07:42.160

J.G.: like, how am I going to show myself up to these higher schools when I was— doing my

00:07:42.160 - 00:07:46.620

J.G.: high school—during my high school career, you know, how can I show that I am really

00:07:46.620 - 00:07:52.800

J.G.: good at academics and I really want to do academic things, but I also didn't

00:07:52.800 - 00:07:59.260

J.G.: have the money to show for it. But some hobbies I had and also still have were

00:07:59.260 - 00:08:06.300

J.G.: like playing video games. I like following up on politics, not so much

00:08:06.300 - 00:08:12.140

J.G.: like – more so the factual base, if that makes sense. So like this

00:08:12.140 - 00:08:15.940

J.G.: happened, so this happened. And also trying to figure out, you know, what the

00:08:15.940 - 00:08:20.320

J.G.: election might become. I used to watch livestreams of elections

00:08:20.320 - 00:08:23.780

J.G.: in high school. I still do now in the background whenever I'm completing

00:08:23.780 - 00:08:30.560

J.G.: homework. I also love, I say studying linguistics, although people

00:08:30.560 - 00:08:35.180

J.G.: think studying is like, "Oh, man, I have to study for the test tomorrow." But I love

00:08:35.180 - 00:08:42.060

J.G.: following up in linguistics. I love languages. So like learning about

00:08:42.060 - 00:08:46.100

J.G.: different types of languages, how they're pronounced, how they're structured, more

00:08:46.100 - 00:08:52.320

J.G.: so their pronunciation to the point where I can actually hear, and I'm pretty

00:08:52.320 - 00:08:54.730

J.G.: good at whenever I hear a language, I can pinpoint what it probably is.

00:08:54.730 - 00:08:57.200

K.D.: Wow. That’s awesome.

00:08:57.200 - 00:08:59.560

J.G.: Yeah, the

00:08:59.560 - 00:09:05.040

J.G.: harder ones are – the more – the harder languages to point out for me are the

00:09:05.780 - 00:09:11.160

J.G.: more smaller ones like Croatian versus Serbian. I'm going to have a hard time

00:09:11.160 - 00:09:13.870

J.G.: because they just sound basically like Germanic or Russian anyway.

00:09:13.870 - 00:09:16.570

K.D.: That's awesome. That's really cool.

00:09:16.570 - 00:09:16.620

J.G.: Trying to figure out.

00:09:16.620 - 00:09:21.980

K.D.: In studying

00:09:21.980 - 00:09:25.780

K.D.: the languages, have you picked up some other languages yourself? Like which

00:09:25.780 - 00:09:26.340

K.D.: languages do you speak?

00:09:26.340 - 00:09:36.360

J.G.: I want to become fluent in Spanish and in ASL . So Spanish is

00:09:36.360 - 00:09:41.420

J.G.: because actually my parents never learned Spanish from my grandparents

00:09:41.420 - 00:09:46.900

J.G.: because my grandparents grew up during segregation in Texas. So they were told

00:09:46.900 - 00:09:52.020

J.G.: and actually beaten with rulers and other things to never speak Spanish in

00:09:52.020 - 00:09:57.180

J.G.: public. So my grandparents didn't teach them Spanish in an effort to kind of

00:09:57.180 - 00:10:02.920

J.G.: like not have them go through that same trouble. And then similarly, my parents,

00:10:02.920 - 00:10:07.420

J.G.: since they didn't know Spanish, I didn't learn Spanish. So I'm trying to learn

00:10:07.420 - 00:10:13.300

J.G.: Spanish now so I can at least speak to some of my older family members. I've

00:10:13.300 - 00:10:22.360

J.G.: taken some Spanish classes as well here. And then ASL is because, let's see, I

00:10:23.100 - 00:10:27.480

J.G.: was interested in ASL simply because it was just not spoken languages

00:10:27.480 - 00:10:31.480

J.G.: and I was interested in language. So I was like, "What could this be about?" And I

00:10:31.480 - 00:10:39.680

J.G.: realized I really love the non-speaking form of trying to communicate. So I'm

00:10:39.680 - 00:10:43.760

J.G.: also trying to become fluent in ASL, as well. But other languages are just kind of

00:10:43.760 - 00:10:46.400

J.G.: like a surface-level, like, "Oh, they say this, they say this."

00:10:46.400 - 00:10:48.220

K.D.: And I guess you could study then

00:10:48.220 - 00:10:51.780

K.D.: the differences between like American Sign Language and British

00:10:51.780 - 00:10:57.480

K.D.: Sign Language. That would be fascinating, I'm sure. You mentioned you like to play

00:10:57.480 - 00:11:01.160

K.D.: games. Are there any specific particular games that you enjoy?

00:11:01.160 - 00:11:03.240

J.G.: I grew up and this

00:11:03.240 - 00:11:06.020

J.G.: is actually kind of surprising when I came to Baltimore. I always grew up with

00:11:06.020 - 00:11:11.560

J.G.: shooting games and like live- action games like Call of Duty and Modern

00:11:11.560 - 00:11:17.440

J.G.: Warfare. And I also grew up with zombie games. So trying to remember. So like Left

00:11:17.440 - 00:11:22.020

J.G.: 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2, Dead Rising were games that I also grew up with. But I also

00:11:22.020 - 00:11:25.960

J.G.: grew up with more tamer games like Minecraft. Minecraft was also a

00:11:25.960 - 00:11:38.320

J.G.: foundation of my childhood. And also, let's see, I would also say Gears of War

00:11:38.320 - 00:11:40.840

J.G.: and Halo as well.

00:11:40.840 - 00:11:44.920

K.D.: Cool. It seems like while you were in high school you were

00:11:46.200 - 00:11:49.320

K.D.: thinking about like prep for college. Do you feel like your high school did a

00:11:49.320 - 00:11:53.120

K.D.: good job with the resources that it had for college prep?

00:11:53.120 - 00:11:53.600

J.G.: I would say definitely

00:11:53.600 - 00:11:57.600

J.G.: yes. To get into a four-year school, it definitely had the

00:11:58.280 - 00:12:04.920

J.G.: resources for it. My high school boasted about having a 99 percent college

00:12:04.920 - 00:12:09.580

J.G.: acceptance rate because it was a college prep school. The issue for me was that I

00:12:09.580 - 00:12:18.000

J.G.: wanted to be in a T-50 school or a T-10 even. I wanted to be in a,

00:12:18.000 - 00:12:24.160

J.G.: you know, Ivy League school. That was something I was always

00:12:24.160 - 00:12:30.320

J.G.: worried about because I wasn't poor but I also wasn't rich. So

00:12:30.320 - 00:12:34.540

J.G.: like, I didn't have to worry about, as I said before, food on the table or like a

00:12:34.540 - 00:12:38.080

J.G.: roof over my head, but I also couldn't afford these summer programs

00:12:38.080 - 00:12:42.220

J.G.: that I would read on the internet of like, "Oh my goodness, I got

00:12:42.220 - 00:12:46.680

J.G.: into Harvard because I did this. I had this internship in Africa." And I'm just

00:12:46.680 - 00:12:51.400

J.G.: like, well, I can't even do that. I couldn’t even – the best thing I could do

00:12:51.400 - 00:12:55.800

J.G.: in my high school summers was simply relax or

00:12:55.800 - 00:13:02.620

J.G.: volunteer. Because again, my parents didn't want me to work unless it was my

00:13:02.620 - 00:13:08.120

J.G.: decision to work flat out just to get money for myself.

00:13:08.120 - 00:13:08.800

K.D.: Could you speak to

00:13:08.860 - 00:13:12.540

K.D.: your parents' thoughts on education?

00:13:12.540 - 00:13:17.400

J.G.: My parents, let's see, they were

00:13:17.400 - 00:13:22.940

J.G.: always supportive of—let’s see, how to describe this? The were always supportive

00:13:22.940 - 00:13:28.100

J.G.: of me becoming whatever I want. But they were always like, "You need to get a high

00:13:28.100 - 00:13:32.820

J.G.: school diploma, you need to get a college degree." So they were always, I won't

00:13:32.820 - 00:13:38.440

J.G.: say forceful about it, they were always supportive/encouraging. There we

00:13:38.440 - 00:13:43.200

J.G.: go. They were always encouraging me to get high-level degrees. So they were always

00:13:43.200 - 00:13:46.860

J.G.: kind of happy in the fact that I stayed in academic, if that makes sense. Just like, "

00:13:46.860 - 00:13:49.320

J.G.: Oh, I want to become a doctor, I want to become a researcher." They were always

00:13:49.320 - 00:13:55.440

J.G.: supportive of me. They still are. They're like, we don't, like, they're like, "It

00:13:55.440 - 00:13:59.040

J.G.: doesn't matter if you take ten years or thirty years to become a doctor. We'll still

00:13:59.040 - 00:14:15.220

J.G.: be supportive of you." So they were always, how to describe this, very, I would

00:14:15.220 - 00:14:18.420

J.G.: just use the word encouraging, just very encouraging that I get the

00:14:18.420 - 00:14:20.900

J.G.: basics first and then I can become my own person.

00:14:20.900 - 00:14:25.060

K.D.: Nice. That's great. You mentioned

00:14:25.060 - 00:14:30.300

K.D.: your interest in attending like a T-50 or T-10 school. How did you ultimately

00:14:30.300 - 00:14:34.900

K.D.: decide to apply to Hopkins and to attend Hopkins once you applied?

00:14:34.900 - 00:14:37.180

J.G.: Well, the main

00:14:37.180 - 00:14:41.160

J.G.: decision was actually finance. When Hopkins essentially said, "Oh, we'll give

00:14:41.160 - 00:14:44.800

J.G.: you a full ride." They didn't say a full ride, but they gave me more financial aid

00:14:44.800 - 00:14:48.800

J.G.: than any, even the colleges in my hometown. They gave me more financial aid

00:14:48.800 - 00:14:53.760

J.G.: just to come to Hopkins, even like paying for my computer, some travel expenses too.

00:14:53.760 - 00:14:57.680

J.G.: That's what ultimately made me decide to go to Hopkins. That plus the fact I

00:14:57.680 - 00:15:03.320

J.G.: wanted to go to a T-50 or a T-10 school. So ultimately, funny enough, it was

00:15:03.320 - 00:15:07.840

J.G.: actually the finance or the financial aid that helped me come to Hopkins and

00:15:07.840 - 00:15:08.900

J.G.: actually stay at Hopkins.

00:15:08.900 - 00:15:12.120

K.D.: And what was your family's reaction when you were

00:15:12.120 - 00:15:19.520

K.D.: accepted to Hopkins? How did they feel about the idea of you moving so far away

00:15:19.520 - 00:15:21.040

K.D.: and like what were their thoughts there?

00:15:21.040 - 00:15:26.680

J.G.: Actually, everyone in my family was very

00:15:26.680 - 00:15:32.260

J.G.: excited the fact that I got into Hopkins because they all knew that it

00:15:32.260 - 00:15:37.140

J.G.: was a high up school. I didn't at the time, funny enough, know that it was a high up

00:15:37.140 - 00:15:42.020

J.G.: school. In high school, I only knew about Ivy Leagues. I didn't really know about

00:15:42.020 - 00:15:45.740

J.G.: Hopkins so much, funny enough. To be honest, this is actually a really

00:15:45.740 - 00:15:50.740

J.G.: funny thing. I only applied to Hopkins the night of the deadline. So like the

00:15:50.740 - 00:15:55.760

J.G.: reason why is because every application was $70.00. That was a lot for my family. And

00:15:55.760 - 00:16:00.060

J.G.: so, you know, I was telling my mom, I was like, you know, "We can't, not so much we

00:16:00.060 - 00:16:02.980

J.G.: can't afford this, but I don't want to pay for something I'm most

00:16:02.980 - 00:16:08.020

J.G.: likely going to get rejected from." And my mom kept on pestering me about like 6:00

00:16:08.020 - 00:16:11.700

J.G.: p.m. I remember the night of, "Just apply, I'll give you the $70.00, just apply." And I was

00:16:11.800 - 00:16:18.360

J.G.: like, "Okay, fine." So for like the last two or three hours, I crafted

00:16:18.360 - 00:16:24.520

J.G.: an essay from my previous ones about why I wanted to attend Hopkins and I

00:16:24.520 - 00:16:27.800

J.G.: submitted it. I was like, I told my mom, I remember after I submitted it, I was like, "

00:16:27.800 - 00:16:30.780

J.G.: That was like 75 bucks you kind of wasted." She's like, "I don't care. It's

00:16:30.780 - 00:16:35.780

J.G.: still a try." I was like, okay. Okay. Anyway, but they were all excited when I got into

00:16:35.780 - 00:16:36.460

J.G.: Hopkins.

00:16:36.460 - 00:16:40.460

K.D.: Yeah, I guess she was right.

00:16:40.460 - 00:16:43.700

J.G.: Yeah, she was right. And I was like, I

00:16:44.380 - 00:16:48.120

J.G.: remember when I first got it, when I actually got into Hopkins, when I got the

00:16:48.120 - 00:16:53.980

J.G.: acceptance, I was actually in my car with my mom. We were driving down, you

00:16:53.980 - 00:17:01.160

J.G.: probably don't know this street, but it's called Potranco. And I remember it

00:17:01.160 - 00:17:09.820

J.G.: was like roughly five minutes after the deadlines or the acceptances came out. I

00:17:09.820 - 00:17:12.560

J.G.: completely forgot about them because it was not on my mind that I was even going

00:17:12.560 - 00:17:18.420

J.G.: to get into it. And so when I first saw that email of like, "Oh, your Hopkins," what should

00:17:18.420 - 00:17:22.960

J.G.: we call it, "decision has come out," I was like, oh, great. It's another rejection

00:17:22.960 - 00:17:27.260

J.G.: because I got rejected from Harvard and Yale beforehand. And so I opened it and

00:17:27.260 - 00:17:32.400

J.G.: the first thing I see is, "You're accepted." And I remember because my

00:17:32.400 - 00:17:35.180

J.G.: parents are Christian, I was like, "Mom, can I curse?" And she was like, "Oh, yeah, yeah, you

00:17:35.180 - 00:17:38.700

J.G.: can," because she saw it and I was like, "Oh, fuck yes," outside the car

00:17:38.700 - 00:17:44.120

J.G.: window. So all my family, including me, were extremely excited to go. My mom

00:17:44.120 - 00:17:47.860

J.G.: obviously was like, "Oh, we don't want you to go," but she also knew like I'm

00:17:47.860 - 00:17:52.400

J.G.: becoming my own person. She's not going to hold me back. She's like, "Do what you have

00:17:52.400 - 00:17:57.640

J.G.: to do to become yourself." So all my family was excited. They also

00:17:57.640 - 00:18:02.000

J.G.: somewhat helped to pitch in to the cost of things as well.

00:18:02.000 - 00:18:05.200

K.D.: This is just

00:18:05.200 - 00:18:09.540

K.D.: going off of what you've said, but was Christianity a big part of your

00:18:09.540 - 00:18:09.840

K.D.: upbringing?

00:18:09.840 - 00:18:15.300

J.G.: Yes, definitely. I still pretend to be Christian

00:18:15.300 - 00:18:23.320

J.G.: around them. I'm actually quite agnostic now. I'm not so much Christian anymore. It

00:18:23.320 - 00:18:29.760

J.G.: just collides with different things in my mind that I'm not practicing

00:18:29.760 - 00:18:32.120

J.G.: anymore, if you want to make sense of that. But

00:18:32.120 - 00:18:36.860

J.G.: Christianity was a big thing growing up, and it's still a big thing in my family.

00:18:36.860 - 00:18:43.540

J.G.: So actually for the first, what is it, from pre-K to fourth grade, I was actually

00:18:43.540 - 00:18:46.500

J.G.: at a Christian private school before I got moved to a private charter school.

00:18:46.500 - 00:18:49.460

K.D.: Cool.

00:18:51.920 - 00:18:56.620

K.D.: Transitioning back to Hopkins, could you describe the first few weeks of your

00:18:56.620 - 00:19:02.240

K.D.: undergrad experience? Tell me, explaining or describing the transition from home

00:19:02.240 - 00:19:07.020

K.D.: to campus, moving to a different state. What was that like for you?

00:19:07.020 - 00:19:07.420

J.G.: I remember

00:19:07.420 - 00:19:11.300

J.G.: actually on my first day, I was really excited because this was the first time

00:19:11.300 - 00:19:15.000

J.G.: I was ever away from my parents. This newfound sense of

00:19:15.000 - 00:19:22.560

J.G.: freedom was actually amazing. But then it kind of all hit me the day

00:19:22.560 - 00:19:26.600

J.G.: of later in the night because I took a shower, I was getting ready for

00:19:26.600 - 00:19:33.720

J.G.: bed, and I didn't have the sounds of my dogs barking, or at the

00:19:33.720 - 00:19:37.620

J.G.: time I had a cat, my cat was meowing or something like that. I didn't

00:19:37.620 - 00:19:44.760

J.G.: have my brothers bothering me. I didn't have my parents calling for me to do

00:19:44.760 - 00:19:49.120

J.G.: such things. And so I would say it kind of hit me, the fact that I was like, okay,

00:19:49.120 - 00:20:00.100

J.G.: this is actually different from my house. Getting ready, traveling, and

00:20:00.100 - 00:20:04.460

J.G.: actually setting up was quite normal for me. It wasn't until that night that

00:20:04.460 - 00:20:06.880

J.G.: actually I was like, okay, this is actually going to be different for me. How

00:20:06.880 - 00:20:12.780

J.G.: in the world am I going to actually live by myself? Because at the time my roommate

00:20:12.780 - 00:20:15.760

J.G.: hadn't moved in because I had pre-orientation, so I had the room for

00:20:15.760 - 00:20:27.440

J.G.: about a week to myself. And then I would say throughout orientation I tried

00:20:27.440 - 00:20:30.400

J.G.: to make friends, and throughout the first couple of classes I also tried to make

00:20:30.400 - 00:20:37.280

J.G.: friends, but I couldn't really, which I guess you could say

00:20:37.280 - 00:20:43.860

J.G.: it made me feel really lonely. I just couldn't find any friends that I

00:20:43.860 - 00:20:49.260

J.G.: could actually relate to here. Everyone here seemed

00:20:49.260 - 00:20:53.540

J.G.: better than me, which is that imposter syndrome. Everyone here had

00:20:53.540 - 00:20:58.580

J.G.: internships at different places. They all had research

00:20:58.580 - 00:21:04.640

J.G.: experience beforehand. I would hear that these

00:21:04.640 - 00:21:09.400

J.G.: people got fives on all their APs when I was just really happy to get a three.

00:21:12.140 - 00:21:19.580

J.G.: I just kind of felt out of place. My first semester was

00:21:19.580 - 00:21:24.960

J.G.: actually kind of, I won't say bad, but it was quite less enjoyable, I would say. It

00:21:24.960 - 00:21:29.140

J.G.: wasn't until the second semester when I found my group of friends in Abnormal

00:21:29.140 - 00:21:34.520

J.G.: Psychology class, which is now called Psychopathology, that I actually started to

00:21:34.520 - 00:21:36.000

J.G.: really like being in Baltimore.

00:21:36.000 - 00:21:44.200

K.D.: How did you find the transition, I guess starting

00:21:44.200 - 00:21:48.500

K.D.: out, but maybe over your time at Hopkins, but that initial transition

00:21:48.500 - 00:21:51.700

K.D.: from high school academics to Hopkins academics, how was that?

00:21:51.700 - 00:21:57.080

J.G.: I would say that was

00:21:57.080 - 00:22:02.580

J.G.: pretty much normal for me. In high school I had to self-study

00:22:02.580 - 00:22:06.280

J.G.: a lot, which kind of carried over to Hopkins. The reason why is because my

00:22:06.280 - 00:22:10.820

J.G.: parents, they couldn't help me anymore with AP Calculus or AP Biology.

00:22:10.820 - 00:22:13.560

J.G.: They couldn't help me with all my APs because they didn't know

00:22:13.560 - 00:22:18.560

J.G.: the material. My older brother couldn't help me, except for math, with

00:22:18.560 - 00:22:23.320

J.G.: all the materials like AP sciences and AP research and things like

00:22:23.320 - 00:22:27.840

J.G.: that because he also didn't take those classes. So, a lot of the self-studying

00:22:27.840 - 00:22:31.040

J.G.: that I had in high school actually carried over to college very

00:22:31.040 - 00:22:31.780

J.G.: well.

00:22:31.780 - 00:22:37.280

K.D.: Have you met any other first-generation college students at

00:22:37.340 - 00:22:37.580

K.D.: Hopkins?

00:22:37.580 - 00:22:46.760

J.G.: Yes, I have. It's so weird because they appear just like

00:22:46.760 - 00:22:52.100

J.G.: every other Hopkins student. The only thing that actually relates me to them

00:22:52.100 - 00:22:55.860

J.G.: is the fact that we always worry about how we're going to pay for things all the

00:22:55.860 - 00:22:59.080

J.G.: time.

00:22:59.080 - 00:23:05.860

K.D.: Do you feel like Student Affairs, that there were resources

00:23:05.860 - 00:23:10.000

K.D.: like the FLI office that were supportive for first-gen students, or for

00:23:10.000 - 00:23:11.700

K.D.: you navigating Hopkins?

00:23:11.700 - 00:23:18.920

J.G.: I would say yes, but I often didn't go to, actually I went

00:23:18.920 - 00:23:33.480

J.G.: to some events for FLI. But a lot of the, let's see, I would say for navigating

00:23:33.480 - 00:23:39.380

J.G.: Hopkins, it was pretty much the same for every student. I actually went to FLI for

00:23:39.380 - 00:23:47.180

J.G.: actually getting a job and getting research. But really, let's see, I wouldn't

00:23:47.180 - 00:23:52.610

J.G.: say the FLI office, I don't want to speak bad of the FLI office, but I didn't use the FLI office that often.

00:23:52.610 - 00:23:58.030

K.D.: Gotcha.

00:23:58.030 - 00:24:03.460

J.G.: Yeah,

00:24:03.920 - 00:24:09.900

J.G.: because I would say, let's see, because I'm not first- generation, but I am definitely limited-income. So I would

00:24:09.900 - 00:24:13.760

J.G.: say for the most part, I already knew what college was going to be like. It was

00:24:13.760 - 00:24:16.900

J.G.: more so the payment that I was always worried about.

00:24:16.900 - 00:24:19.680

K.D.: We've touched on this a

00:24:19.680 - 00:24:24.160

K.D.: little bit, your interest in psychology, could you talk more about what you're

00:24:24.160 - 00:24:28.940

K.D.: studying, more about your major, why you chose that major, and what you feel is

00:24:28.940 - 00:24:30.320

K.D.: valuable about it?

00:24:30.320 - 00:24:35.320

J.G.: So I'm majoring in psychology, and actually I'm studying the

00:24:35.320 - 00:24:41.180

J.G.: more abnormal aspects about it. So I've taken Abnormal Psychology, Child and

00:24:41.180 - 00:24:45.940

J.G.: Adolescent Psychopathology, and Models of Psychotherapy. I mainly chose it because

00:24:45.940 - 00:24:53.240

J.G.: I was interested from AP Psychology of that, you know, basically what is wrong

00:24:53.240 - 00:24:57.580

J.G.: with that brain and what is wrong with behavior. I was always interested in

00:24:57.580 - 00:25:09.000

J.G.: behavior and thinking, if that makes sense. And so I took Abnormal Psychology

00:25:09.000 - 00:25:14.020

J.G.: just to see if I would even like to study

00:25:14.020 - 00:25:18.940

J.G.: abnormal psychology as a major because I was stuck between psychology

00:25:18.940 - 00:25:24.520

J.G.: and neuroscience. And abnormal psychology is what kept me in the psychology field

00:25:24.520 - 00:25:32.500

J.G.: compared to neuroscience. I feel like what's valuable about psychology is simply

00:25:32.500 - 00:25:37.660

J.G.: realizing kind of like biases about yourself and how other people interact,

00:25:41.000 - 00:25:46.320

J.G.: mainly because there are certain behaviors that you just can't

00:25:46.320 - 00:25:51.040

J.G.: explain except without psychology, like the bystander effect, which is if someone

00:25:51.040 - 00:25:54.300

J.G.: falls down in the street, how come no one helps them immediately? That's because

00:25:54.300 - 00:25:58.260

J.G.: every single person thinks someone else is going to help. And no one

00:25:58.260 - 00:26:04.100

J.G.: ends up helping overall. And so it helped me realize that's going to happen

00:26:04.540 - 00:26:08.000

J.G.: if someone does have a problem in public, I have to be the one to act

00:26:08.000 - 00:26:12.000

J.G.: first because everyone else is going to be thinking someone else is going to help. I

00:26:12.000 - 00:26:18.720

J.G.: have to break that mold. And also what's also valuable about psychology and

00:26:18.760 - 00:26:24.800

J.G.: specifically psychopathology is kind of getting in tune with both your

00:26:24.800 - 00:26:29.760

J.G.: behavior and your thoughts and realizing what could be normal and what's abnormal.

00:26:31.860 - 00:26:39.160

J.G.: It actually helped me realize that I actually had ADHD, which is the reason

00:26:39.160 - 00:26:45.760

J.G.: why I'm actually right now moving back and forth in my chair and as I speak,

00:26:45.760 - 00:26:48.360

J.G.: there's a bunch of pauses and things like that. That's because my brain is

00:26:48.360 - 00:26:56.880

J.G.: going a million miles an hour. But I would I would say psychology isn't for

00:26:56.880 - 00:27:01.460

J.G.: everyone. I will say that. But it's definitely for those who do want to know

00:27:01.460 - 00:27:03.280

J.G.: more about behavior and thoughts.

00:27:03.280 - 00:27:08.800

K.D.: I ask this a little bit later on, but while

00:27:08.800 - 00:27:14.500

K.D.: we're here and thinking about what you've learned through your major and

00:27:14.500 - 00:27:21.380

K.D.: kind of the ramifications in society, after Hopkins is psychology something

00:27:21.380 - 00:27:22.700

K.D.: you want to pursue postgrad?

00:27:22.700 - 00:27:26.000

J.G.: I'm actually pre-med, so I actually want to

00:27:26.000 - 00:27:44.440

J.G.: pursue something psychiatry wise. But I do want to pursue, let's see, psychology research, definitely

00:27:47.840 - 00:27:52.320

J.G.: after Hopkins. So – so my overall goal is to become a doctor, but I actually want to become a

00:27:52.840 - 00:27:57.740

J.G.: physician scientist, which is an MD-Ph.D., go into one of those programs. And I hope

00:27:57.740 - 00:28:04.520

J.G.: to become either, because I'm also stuck now, a psychiatrist or neurologist, but

00:28:04.520 - 00:28:07.270

J.G.: also do psychiatric research as well.

00:28:07.270 - 00:28:08.700

K.D.: A lot of different interests.

00:28:08.700 - 00:28:12.760

J.G.: Yes, but they're

00:28:12.760 - 00:28:15.040

J.G.: they all center around

00:28:15.040 - 00:28:16.600

J.G.: the brain specifically.

00:28:16.600 - 00:28:21.360

K.D.: Have you had any memorable professors or classes in your

00:28:21.360 - 00:28:23.760

K.D.: time here?

00:28:29.960 - 00:28:32.940

J.G.: I'm going to kind of list them off. One was Abnormal Psychology because that

00:28:32.940 - 00:28:38.560

J.G.: actually cemented my interest in research. And then the professor is

00:28:38.620 - 00:28:45.880

J.G.: actually my faculty advisor, Dr. Papadakis. She is an amazing teacher.

00:28:45.880 - 00:28:51.180

J.G.: She is able to teach Abnormal Psychology – it's a lot of information, but she's able

00:28:51.180 - 00:28:56.560

J.G.: to teach it as if you knew nothing about psychology as a whole. She shows

00:28:56.560 - 00:29:00.360

J.G.: you, you know, "This is what this is called. This is what it means." And if you ever

00:29:00.360 - 00:29:06.340

J.G.: need any help, you can always book office hours with her. Another class that was

00:29:06.340 - 00:29:11.580

J.G.: very memorable was organic chemistry, not because both it was hard, but also

00:29:11.580 - 00:29:18.400

J.G.: because of Dr. Nsengiyumva. Dr. N is an amazing professor as well. He's able to

00:29:18.400 - 00:29:24.360

J.G.: teach organic chemistry so well that you'd never, honestly, for me, whenever I

00:29:24.360 - 00:29:27.580

J.G.: took his class, I never had to look over his lecture notes again. I never had to

00:29:27.580 - 00:29:32.640

J.G.: watch his lectures, even though he recorded them, simply because how he

00:29:32.640 - 00:29:46.340

J.G.: taught it was – made so much sense from the first time he did. And then. Let me see. I would

00:29:46.340 - 00:29:57.600

J.G.: say another memorable class and professor is – let's see. It would probably be

00:29:57.600 - 00:30:06.060

J.G.: FBBC Foundations of Brain Behavior and Cognition with Dr. Smith, which helped me

00:30:06.060 - 00:30:10.920

J.G.: realize that I also want to do something neuroscience related, at least in my

00:30:10.920 - 00:30:18.680

J.G.: career, not sure when exactly, but I do love the physical aspect of the brain

00:30:18.680 - 00:30:19.700

J.G.: as well.

00:30:19.700 - 00:30:28.160

K.D.: Can you actually speak a little bit more about kind of the line or

00:30:28.160 - 00:30:32.460

K.D.: differences between neuroscience and psychiatry and kind of how they work

00:30:32.460 - 00:30:33.380

K.D.: in tandem?

00:30:33.380 - 00:30:36.660

J.G.: Yeah. So there's actually four different aspects. There's

00:30:36.660 - 00:30:41.900

J.G.: psychology, neuroscience, psychiatry and neurology. Psychiatry and neurology are

00:30:41.900 - 00:30:47.220

J.G.: the treatment of. So psychiatry is the treatment of behavioral disorders. And

00:30:47.220 - 00:30:51.440

J.G.: then neurology is the treatment of nervous disorders or nervous system

00:30:51.440 - 00:30:55.820

J.G.: disorders. So those are actually the medicine aspects, while psychology and

00:30:55.820 - 00:31:02.680

J.G.: neuroscience are the study of whatever they study. So psychology is the study of

00:31:02.680 - 00:31:07.980

J.G.: the brain and behavior, while neuroscience is the study of the actual

00:31:07.980 - 00:31:18.300

J.G.: brain and actual like neural networks. So mainly

00:31:18.300 - 00:31:21.140

J.G.: psychology and neuroscience are research based, while psychiatry and

00:31:21.140 - 00:31:25.160

J.G.: neurology are medicine based. They obviously intertwine quite a lot, but

00:31:25.160 - 00:31:29.680

J.G.: those are the two main differences. And then the difference between psychology

00:31:29.680 - 00:31:37.200

J.G.: and neuroscience is psychology is a study of the behavior and cognitive

00:31:37.200 - 00:31:43.120

J.G.: processes, that is, you know, how do we act and things like that, while

00:31:43.120 - 00:31:51.300

J.G.: neuroscience is more brain-based, which is, what parts of the brain do

00:31:51.300 - 00:31:55.680

J.G.: this? How do these different neurons work together? It's more physical

00:31:55.680 - 00:32:02.420

J.G.: based, while psychology is more I won't say abstract, but it's definitely more

00:32:02.420 - 00:32:04.120

J.G.: human based, if that makes sense.

00:32:04.120 - 00:32:05.960

K.D.: Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. And maybe

00:32:05.960 - 00:32:09.760

K.D.: psychology thinking of kind of external influence.

00:32:09.760 - 00:32:10.320

J.G.: Yes.

00:32:10.320 - 00:32:14.980

K.D.: Rather than kind of like your brain chemistry in itself. Thank you so much. That's

00:32:14.980 - 00:32:22.380

K.D.: really a great explanation. Can you talk about your living arrangements

00:32:22.380 - 00:32:27.080

K.D.: you've had at school? Moving in freshman year, kind of which dorm you were in and

00:32:27.080 - 00:32:31.720

K.D.: how your living situations kind of changed over your time here.

00:32:31.720 - 00:32:42.420

J.G.: So let's see. In my

00:32:42.420 - 00:32:50.360

J.G.: first year, I lived in AMR 13 with another roommate. I can't remember his name. I

00:32:51.120 - 00:32:54.160

J.G.: actually didn't like AMR 1, mainly because of the communal style bathrooms. I

00:32:54.160 - 00:33:03.180

J.G.: actually completely hated it, personally. But I did like the fact that it was

00:33:03.180 - 00:33:06.300

J.G.: close to all my classes and it was definitely on campus and I was close

00:33:06.300 - 00:33:14.800

J.G.: to FFC , now called Hopkins Café, but it hasn't been – students don't call it

00:33:14.800 - 00:33:20.720

J.G.: Hopkins Café. For the past four years now, actually, now that I think about it, it's

00:33:20.790 - 00:33:27.150

J.G.: always been called FFC. Anyway. And then in sophomore year, I got into the Homewood

00:33:27.150 - 00:33:34.890

J.G.: Apartments where I also had a suitemate. I also can't remember his

00:33:34.890 - 00:33:44.210

J.G.: name because we don't interact that much. I would say I definitely lived in both

00:33:44.210 - 00:33:55.510

J.G.: those years, like I didn't have a lot of things. Let's see. Like a lot of

00:33:55.510 - 00:33:59.330

J.G.: people have like rugs in the room. They have couches, which is crazy. They have

00:33:59.330 - 00:34:04.390

J.G.: TVs. They have things like that. I didn't have any of that except really my

00:34:04.390 - 00:34:10.310

J.G.: computer and other things. So it made living quite – it was – like,

00:34:10.310 - 00:34:15.310

J.G.: I traveled lightly, I guess you can say, which helped when it helped when I

00:34:15.310 - 00:34:19.110

J.G.: moved in and moved out all the time because I could move in and I could move

00:34:19.110 - 00:34:22.590

J.G.: in within an hour or so and I could also move out within three hours. It was

00:34:22.590 - 00:34:28.670

J.G.: pretty easy. And then in my junior and sophomore year, I was able to get a job

00:34:28.670 - 00:34:42.810

J.G.: my summer from sophomore to junior. So I decided – me and my parents, because

00:34:42.810 - 00:34:46.970

J.G.: we were choosing apartments at the time, decided to choose to live at The Academy,

00:34:46.970 - 00:34:51.150

J.G.: which is expensive. But we chose The Academy because we also didn't want

00:34:51.150 - 00:34:55.350

J.G.: to buy a bed. We didn't want to buy furniture and then have to either sell

00:34:55.350 - 00:35:04.070

J.G.: them

00:35:04.070 - 00:35:09.850

J.G.: throw them away at the end or somehow move them back. So that was a

00:35:09.850 - 00:35:18.330

J.G.: decision we came to together. So that's also where I live now at, which I'll say

00:35:18.330 - 00:35:22.990

J.G.: I actually like The Academy simply because all the rooms are smaller, which

00:35:22.990 - 00:35:25.830

J.G.: helped me a lot because I didn't have a lot of things, so it made me feel like I

00:35:25.830 - 00:35:30.090

J.G.: actually had more things with the little things, minimal things that I did have. So

00:35:31.390 - 00:35:39.970

J.G.: I would say, my living arrangements were probably, they weren't bad overall. I just

00:35:39.970 - 00:35:44.550

J.G.: really didn't like AMR 1. Some people do and I kind of congratulate them.

00:35:45.130 - 00:35:49.730

J.G.: But I would say I really love my sophomore, junior and senior living

00:35:49.730 - 00:35:51.430

J.G.: arrangements.

00:35:51.430 - 00:35:58.010

K.D.: I'm going to jump ahead to question 15, just

00:35:58.010 - 00:36:01.650

K.D.: because you touched on it already, but how did you generally spend your

00:36:01.650 - 00:36:05.350

K.D.: summers or breaks? You mentioned having a summer job between sophomore

00:36:05.350 - 00:36:11.170

K.D.: and junior year. Did you have any other jobs or did you mostly travel home or

00:36:11.170 - 00:36:12.350

K.D.: did you stick around Baltimore?

00:36:12.350 - 00:36:18.610

J.G.: So let's see. My freshman summer, I actually did

00:36:18.610 - 00:36:23.890

J.G.: volunteer research. Actually, my freshman summer, my sophomore summer and then my

00:36:23.890 - 00:36:28.070

J.G.: junior summer. No, actually, just my freshman and sophomore summer, I had to

00:36:28.070 - 00:36:32.530

J.G.: go back to San Antonio because I can't afford to stay in Baltimore. My

00:36:32.530 - 00:36:37.990

J.G.: freshman summer, I did volunteer research, which is where I did

00:36:37.990 - 00:36:42.670

J.G.: research, but I didn't get paid because I knew I had to get

00:36:51.610 - 00:36:57.010

J.G.: experience somehow, but I also knew if I had a job, it would also take

00:36:57.010 - 00:37:02.890

J.G.: away time I could be doing research. And also I wanted to enjoy my

00:37:02.890 - 00:37:11.950

J.G.: freshman summer compared to other students. My sophomore summer. I was able

00:37:11.950 - 00:37:16.830

J.G.: to get a research job where I couldn't stay in Baltimore. I had to go

00:37:16.830 - 00:37:22.270

J.G.: back to San Antonio, but I was able to do dry lab research, which is

00:37:22.270 - 00:37:33.450

J.G.: basically like computing numbers at Hopkins Hospital. That's

00:37:33.450 - 00:37:37.890

J.G.: where they mainly did the work, but I worked remote and got

00:37:37.890 - 00:37:43.590

J.G.: paid. And then my junior summer, I was actually able to get the PURA summer

00:37:43.590 - 00:37:48.930

J.G.: grant. So I was able to stay in Baltimore and also conduct wet lab

00:37:48.930 - 00:37:52.070

J.G.: research, which is like research where you mix like chemicals and things like

00:37:52.070 - 00:37:57.910

J.G.: that together in an actual lab. So that's how I spent my summers. I actually love

00:37:57.910 - 00:38:06.670

J.G.: the wet lab research so much that I'm still doing it now. So I would say I

00:38:06.670 - 00:38:11.590

J.G.: didn't actually complete any internships, but I did do research and

00:38:11.590 - 00:38:16.990

J.G.: then my breaks, I always just spent just relaxing because they're kind of short

00:38:16.990 - 00:38:27.470

J.G.: and there's no reason to actually like squeeze something in. I

00:38:27.470 - 00:38:32.670

J.G.: would say that's how I spent my summers and breaks. Definitely my summers

00:38:32.670 - 00:38:36.690

J.G.: were trying to figure out how in the world I'm going to do stuff, but I also

00:38:36.690 - 00:38:38.650

J.G.: wanted to relax compared to others.

00:38:38.650 - 00:38:41.810

K.D.: Do you remember which labs

00:38:41.810 - 00:38:45.990

K.D.: specifically you worked in, what they were studying, what they were researching?

00:38:45.990 - 00:38:53.930

J.G.: So my sophomore summer, I worked in the, I believe it's called the schizophrenia

00:38:53.930 - 00:38:57.870

J.G.: and schizoaffective lab. They were studying treatment resistant

00:38:57.870 - 00:39:01.770

J.G.: schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorders, which are psychotic disorders,

00:39:03.170 - 00:39:09.390

J.G.: which are most often very resistant to antipsychotic medication. So

00:39:09.390 - 00:39:17.290

J.G.: they were studying how the behaviors, you know, the symptoms, if any way,

00:39:17.290 - 00:39:25.890

J.G.: could relate to their treatment resistance. My junior summer, I did

00:39:25.890 - 00:39:34.910

J.G.: research in the Smith lab where I did, let's see, research into the development

00:39:34.910 - 00:39:41.790

J.G.: of Parkinson's disease, specifically, how do peripheral infections, which are

00:39:41.790 - 00:39:47.950

J.G.: infections that are that don't relate to the brain, nerves or spinal cord in any

00:39:47.950 - 00:39:55.690

J.G.: way, how does the stress from those, if they do cause Parkinson's disease, how do

00:39:55.690 - 00:40:01.630

J.G.: they how do they cause Parkinson's disease, if that makes sense. Because the body as a whole

00:40:01.630 - 00:40:09.090

J.G.: is connected, so not one thing is ever happening in one location. And then my

00:40:09.090 - 00:40:14.410

J.G.: freshman summer, I did, to get my foot, I guess, kind of in the door of research, I

00:40:15.170 - 00:40:20.670

J.G.: did research at UT Health Science – University of Texas Health Science

00:40:20.670 - 00:40:31.430

J.G.: Center at San Antonio with Dr. Roache, there we go, Dr. Roache, spelled R-O-A-C-H-E,

00:40:31.430 - 00:40:44.070

J.G.: into the effects of long-term opioid use. But it wasn't for opioid users; it

00:40:44.070 - 00:40:49.330

J.G.: was for people who are actually prescribed opioids to treat pain

00:40:49.330 - 00:40:54.530

J.G.: management. And then he wanted to – but I left the study early

00:40:54.530 - 00:40:58.850

J.G.: because I had to come back to Hopkins – he also wanted to see how that related to

00:40:58.850 - 00:41:02.650

J.G.: marijuana use at the same time, because in Texas, marijuana is actually quite

00:41:02.650 - 00:41:05.790

J.G.: banned, so he's trying to, I'm not sure if he's advocating for it, he's

00:41:05.790 - 00:41:07.110

J.G.: just researching it.

00:41:07.110 - 00:41:15.750

K.D.: In addition to the kind of lab experience you were getting

00:41:15.750 - 00:41:23.430

K.D.: and different kind of subject-specific opportunities you had, did you join any

00:41:23.430 - 00:41:27.370

K.D.: clubs or participate in any kind of on campus student activities while at

00:41:27.370 - 00:41:27.590

K.D.: Hopkins?

00:41:27.590 - 00:41:31.750

J.G.: Yes, the first one I would say I'm still a part of is Student

00:41:31.750 - 00:41:37.930

J.G.: Government Association where I've actually been a senator there for three

00:41:37.930 - 00:41:46.670

J.G.: years. I was also a part of Psi Chi National Honor Society, which is the

00:41:46.670 - 00:41:52.910

J.G.: psychology national honor society at Hopkins. I was also part of the HOP in my

00:41:52.910 - 00:41:56.130

J.G.: junior year, not so much my senior year, because it took up a lot of my time.

00:41:56.810 - 00:42:01.550

J.G.: Where the HOP kind of does the, they do the planning of events, a lot of the

00:42:01.550 - 00:42:14.730

J.G.: events, and they also do the volunteering. Let's see. I will also say, not so much

00:42:14.730 - 00:42:20.450

J.G.: I'm a part of it, but I also go to DSAGA, which is the, you know what

00:42:20.450 - 00:42:22.710

J.G.: DSAGA, right?

00:42:22.710 - 00:42:22.760

K.D.: Diverse Sexuality and Gender Alliance?

00:42:22.760 - 00:42:27.230

J.G.: Yeah, because my friends are also, the president

00:42:27.230 - 00:42:30.360

J.G.: is there as well, so.

00:42:30.360 - 00:42:30.410

K.D.: Cool.

00:42:30.410 - 00:42:36.630

J.G.: Let's see. Yeah, I would say those are the main

00:42:36.630 - 00:42:38.090

J.G.: clubs that I'm a part of.

00:42:38.090 - 00:42:42.890

K.D.: Awesome. How has your relationship with your family been

00:42:42.890 - 00:42:44.010

K.D.: during your time at Hopkins?

00:42:44.010 - 00:42:48.290

J.G.: I would say it's been quite stable, it's been quite

00:42:48.290 - 00:42:56.990

J.G.: the same. I know for me, I know for me and my younger brother, I wouldn't say it's

00:42:56.990 - 00:43:04.110

J.G.: been hard per se, but it has been quite different because we grew up

00:43:04.110 - 00:43:07.770

J.G.: together and we are probably the only ones that ever understand each other.

00:43:08.490 - 00:43:12.670

J.G.: So, for me it was always, I would say it was quite weird because I would leave

00:43:12.670 - 00:43:17.950

J.G.: Hopkins and then I would come back and – because now he's 18, so I kind of missed his

00:43:17.950 - 00:43:21.850

J.G.: entire high school and teenage years. So, for me it was always weird whenever

00:43:21.850 - 00:43:26.870

J.G.: I would come back and his mannerisms or his voice was different

00:43:26.870 - 00:43:35.310

J.G.: and he would always find it weird how my mannerisms were different or how

00:43:35.310 - 00:43:43.710

J.G.: I was able to speak on things differently. But overall, with my parents,

00:43:43.710 - 00:43:47.090

J.G.: it's been the same almost with my parents because I meet with them every

00:43:47.090 - 00:43:55.690

J.G.: Sunday through Zoom. Yeah, I would say my relationship with my family

00:43:55.690 - 00:44:01.190

J.G.: has just been pretty stable at Hopkins. They just know the fact that

00:44:01.190 - 00:44:03.910

J.G.: I have to, not so much I have to be here, but that I want to be here and they're

00:44:03.910 - 00:44:05.330

J.G.: all supportive of it.

00:44:05.330 - 00:44:11.190

K.D.: Yeah, it's nice that you have that built-in time every

00:44:11.190 - 00:44:19.030

K.D.: week to talk over Zoom. Sort of also nice in our modern era to be able to see

00:44:19.030 - 00:44:19.530

K.D.: each other over Zoom.

00:44:19.530 - 00:44:21.130

J.G.: Definitely.

00:44:21.130 - 00:44:26.510

K.D.: As opposed to speaking on the phone, so that's nice. Outside of your

00:44:26.510 - 00:44:31.370

K.D.: family and thinking kind of locally on campus, and it includes your family

00:44:31.370 - 00:44:35.490

K.D.: as well, but otherwise what has your support system been like while you've

00:44:35.490 - 00:44:36.030

K.D.: been at Hopkins?

00:44:36.030 - 00:44:41.690

J.G.: So, of course there was my family as my support system.

00:44:41.690 - 00:44:46.510

J.G.: The way my dad framed it was how they're the last line.

00:44:46.510 - 00:44:51.370

J.G.: They're almost like the net where they will catch me if

00:44:51.370 - 00:44:57.030

J.G.: anything goes wrong. And then I also had my friends from high school that I've

00:44:57.030 - 00:45:05.130

J.G.: still kept in touch with them. And I still hang out with them too. So, they've

00:45:05.130 - 00:45:14.970

J.G.: also been my support system while at Hopkins. And then I also

00:45:14.970 - 00:45:25.590

J.G.: have friends here as well who have also been my support system. I'm trying

00:45:26.230 - 00:45:35.010

J.G.: to think. One of my best friends here would be Raven, where we really bonded

00:45:35.010 - 00:45:40.470

J.G.: over in freshman and sophomore year, how we were both

00:45:40.470 - 00:45:46.930

J.G.: psychology majors and the fact that we both had ADHD, so we would often try

00:45:46.930 - 00:45:54.490

J.G.: to study together. It never worked, which made it more fun. And then I

00:45:54.490 - 00:46:01.610

J.G.: also have another friend, Mateo, who, especially during the summer, because he

00:46:01.610 - 00:46:09.930

J.G.: had an internship here at North, I forgot what it's called. It's like Northup,

00:46:09.930 - 00:46:11.650

J.G.: Northumbrum or?

00:46:11.650 - 00:46:13.360

K.D.: Northrop…

00:46:13.360 - 00:46:13.410

J.G.: Northrop.

00:46:13.410 - 00:46:14.710

K.D.: Yeah, Northrop Grumman.

00:46:14.710 - 00:46:18.510

J.G.: I can't remember. Because he's a

00:46:18.510 - 00:46:20.570

J.G.: mechanical engineer, he had an internship there.

00:46:20.570 - 00:46:21.550

K.D.: A defense contractor.

00:46:21.550 - 00:46:23.590

J.G.: Yeah. And so,

00:46:23.590 - 00:46:28.390

J.G.: during the summer, I know this, we were able to hang out a lot, so we went

00:46:28.390 - 00:46:32.770

J.G.: to the movies together and we also went to the Six Flags too before it closed

00:46:32.770 - 00:46:37.070

J.G.: down. So, I would say my support system has been amazing at Hopkins.

00:46:37.070 - 00:46:41.370

K.D.: Wow,

00:46:41.370 - 00:46:48.530

K.D.: that's great. You talked about this a little bit, just specifically feeling supported

00:46:48.530 - 00:46:57.750

K.D.: by Hopkins as an FLI student, and you mentioned that you found support through

00:46:58.890 - 00:47:05.330

K.D.: FLI programming to get jobs or different opportunities. Could you talk

00:47:05.330 - 00:47:10.190

K.D.: more about the specific programs that you found helpful? And then the second

00:47:10.190 - 00:47:14.270

K.D.: part of the question is, how do you think the university could increase its

00:47:14.270 - 00:47:17.590

K.D.: support for first generation or FLI students?

00:47:17.590 - 00:47:21.850

J.G.: I'm not sure if I can actually

00:47:21.850 - 00:47:24.390

J.G.: name any specific programs and initiatives that I actually went to,

00:47:24.390 - 00:47:25.860

J.G.: because that was like two years ago.

00:47:25.860 - 00:47:27.830

K.D.: No, it's okay.

00:47:27.830 - 00:47:28.810

J.G.: That was a couple years ago and I was

00:47:28.810 - 00:47:31.310

J.G.: like –

00:47:31.310 - 00:47:31.360

K.D.: No problem.

00:47:31.360 - 00:47:36.310

J.G.: The only thing I can remember is that they told me about the

00:47:36.310 - 00:47:42.730

J.G.: budget adjustment, if I ever needed money. They helped me, not so much find

00:47:42.730 - 00:47:52.550

J.G.: research, but said that JHU Hour can help me find research. They also

00:47:52.550 - 00:47:55.870

J.G.: directed me to off-campus housing whenever I was looking for

00:47:55.870 - 00:48:01.270

J.G.: housing for my junior and senior year, about budgeting

00:48:01.270 - 00:48:02.810

J.G.: and things like that.

00:48:09.410 - 00:48:14.750

J.G.: I would say, for me, the initiatives and the programs helped me, I guess

00:48:14.750 - 00:48:16.810

J.G.: they were like a starting point, if that makes sense.

00:48:22.670 - 00:48:23.980

J.G.: I don't know how else to describe it, unfortunately.

00:48:23.980 - 00:48:26.050

K.D.: That's okay.

00:48:26.050 - 00:48:26.610

J.G.: They were more of like a

00:48:26.610 - 00:48:31.410

J.G.: starting point, which I guess that's kind of what it's for, but they were more of a

00:48:31.410 - 00:48:32.350

J.G.: starting point.

00:48:32.350 - 00:48:38.410

K.D.: I guess in addition to the FLI office, were there other

00:48:38.410 - 00:48:44.570

K.D.: campus offices that you found helpful, like Residence Life, Student Affairs,

00:48:44.570 - 00:48:45.810

K.D.: throughout your time here?

00:48:45.810 - 00:48:51.530

J.G.: I would say I found obviously JHU HOUR , which helped me

00:48:51.530 - 00:48:54.430

J.G.: find research and helped me secure my PURA grant.

00:49:07.830 - 00:49:12.310

J.G.: I would say also, since I also worked part-time in the mailroom, so

00:49:12.310 - 00:49:15.870

J.G.: technically on- campus living, specifically the residential life,

00:49:15.870 - 00:49:22.630

J.G.: has also supported me, obviously through income.

00:49:28.590 - 00:49:32.630

J.G.: I'm not sure if it's a program per se, but JHU SMILE also helped me to get

00:49:32.630 - 00:49:35.490

J.G.: that job in the mailroom.

00:49:35.490 - 00:49:37.430

K.D.: Oh, okay.

00:49:37.430 - 00:49:40.090

J.G.: I'm not sure if it's a program, more so it's

00:49:40.090 - 00:49:40.530

J.G.: the website.

00:49:46.790 - 00:49:47.670

J.G.: And then HelWell

00:49:50.650 - 00:49:59.550

J.G.: helped me when I was sick the couple of times I was. And then, what is

00:49:59.550 - 00:50:05.690

J.G.: it, the Counseling Center, I think that's what it's called, helped me to

00:50:05.690 - 00:50:11.010

J.G.: find a doctor to diagnose me with ADHD so I can get SDS support. And also SDS helped

00:50:11.010 - 00:50:17.570

J.G.: me with disability accommodations as well.

00:50:17.570 - 00:50:24.550

K.D.: Thank you for sharing those. How

00:50:24.550 - 00:50:29.650

K.D.: can the university increase its support for first-generation/FLI students, do you

00:50:29.650 - 00:50:29.780

K.D.: think?

00:50:29.780 - 00:50:29.980

J.G.: The only

00:50:44.530 - 00:50:48.990

J.G.: thing I could think of, although this might sound kind of bad, is obviously

00:50:48.990 - 00:50:55.550

J.G.: more financial aid, because a lot of the things

00:50:55.550 - 00:51:05.090

J.G.: that they factor into the budget when delivering financial aid, I would

00:51:05.090 - 00:51:14.970

J.G.: say cost more than intended. My flights often range

00:51:14.970 - 00:51:21.890

J.G.: around $600, which is about right. But then,

00:51:24.310 - 00:51:31.650

J.G.: let's see, things like rent I don't think is calculated enough.

00:51:50.010 - 00:51:53.470

J.G.: Yeah, I would say for the most part the issue with me being limited

00:51:53.470 - 00:52:00.930

J.G.: income was more so the finance aspect. So the university increasing any support in

00:52:00.930 - 00:52:05.850

J.G.: any part of financing and staying in college, or at Hopkins I should say,

00:52:05.850 - 00:52:08.110

J.G.: would definitely support FLI students.

00:52:08.110 - 00:52:12.230

K.D.: Yeah, I think that makes a lot of sense

00:52:12.230 - 00:52:18.510

K.D.: thinking about – there's financial aid and tuition and housing, but

00:52:18.510 - 00:52:23.710

K.D.: thinking about in- between costs like travel and those kinds of day-to-day

00:52:23.710 - 00:52:31.870

K.D.: things for sure. The next question is, has the political climate or any social

00:52:31.870 - 00:52:36.750

K.D.: movements kind of regionally, nationally, internationally impacted your

00:52:36.750 - 00:52:39.970

K.D.: experience at Hopkins? And I also kind of wanted to tie back to you mentioned

00:52:39.970 - 00:52:45.410

K.D.: earlier your involvement in student government as an SGA

00:52:45.410 - 00:52:49.710

K.D.: representative. I think that's relevant to this question, like what kinds of

00:52:49.710 - 00:52:57.910

K.D.: issues that you've maybe seen on campus or kind of locally, how local or other

00:52:58.930 - 00:53:01.310

K.D.: factors have affected your time on campus.

00:53:01.310 - 00:53:04.510

J.G.: So I'll start with the latter

00:53:04.510 - 00:53:09.650

J.G.: question. I would say the biggest questions for sure that

00:53:09.650 - 00:53:16.450

J.G.: were big amongst the student body was the war in Gaza when it first broke out.

00:53:18.970 - 00:53:24.270

J.G.: The decision to overturn affirmative action was another big one. And then also

00:53:24.270 - 00:53:38.710

J.G.: recently was also, let’s see, Trump's cutbacks on research. And also, let's see,

00:53:40.230 - 00:53:45.190

J.G.: like seeing any form of police or ICE on campus was also the four big ones

00:53:45.190 - 00:53:50.910

J.G.: I would say that related to outside political climate. Within Hopkins there

00:53:50.910 - 00:53:54.130

J.G.: was always student needs, of course like housing and dining, but those were the

00:53:54.130 - 00:53:59.150

J.G.: four big ones that came from outside where they even became contentious at

00:54:00.890 - 00:54:15.270

J.G.: times even in the General Body meetings of SGA. I personally try to, as I said, I

00:54:15.270 - 00:54:19.470

J.G.: study, I love to watch politics, but I don't like to be involved in it, if

00:54:19.470 - 00:54:25.330

J.G.: that makes sense. I could see it happen, and if someone told me like, "Oh,

00:54:25.330 - 00:54:31.450

J.G.: you know, what happened here," I could tell them. But I would never be good at

00:54:31.450 - 00:54:35.790

J.G.: advocating for something. I never wanted to take a side per se, publicly that is,

00:54:35.790 - 00:54:43.550

J.G.: if that makes sense. Although I will say a really hard part about ever explaining

00:54:43.550 - 00:54:49.370

J.G.: anything is, funny enough, you're never going to satisfy one side because missing a

00:54:49.370 - 00:54:56.730

J.G.: detail could be seen as, literally could be seen as, what do you want to call it, taking one

00:54:56.730 - 00:55:01.610

J.G.: side, that is you're ignoring one crucial part of information. Or saying

00:55:01.610 - 00:55:08.130

J.G.: one added detail that I don't think is different is also taking a side

00:55:08.130 - 00:55:17.690

J.G.: as well. I will also say, let's see, those are the four biggest

00:55:17.690 - 00:55:22.450

J.G.: parts at Hopkins. I will also say coming from Texas, which is very Republican, and then

00:55:22.450 - 00:55:27.830

J.G.: coming to Baltimore, which is very Democrat, has also been kind of

00:55:27.830 - 00:55:37.290

J.G.: weird for me as well. I remember when I first told my friends, I was like, “

00:55:37.290 - 00:55:40.590

J.G.: Yeah, I'm going to get a gun for my 21st birthday.” That didn't

00:55:40.590 - 00:55:45.670

J.G.: happen. I'm too broke. All my friends looked at me like, "Why would you ever

00:55:45.670 - 00:55:51.510

J.G.: want a gun?" They looked at me like “Guns just cause more gun

00:55:51.510 - 00:55:57.390

J.G.: violence.” And I was like, "To defend myself, why else?" My dad has one, my

00:55:57.390 - 00:56:01.490

J.G.: older brother has one. It's not so much a rite of passage, but it is

00:56:01.490 - 00:56:09.270

J.G.: used for self-defense. My brother has used the gun more so to kill like, cause

00:56:10.630 - 00:56:16.250

J.G.: he works out in, I don't want to say the wilderness per se, but he

00:56:16.250 - 00:56:21.230

J.G.: works outside of the city where you can get coyotes or things like that.

00:56:21.230 - 00:56:31.370

J.G.: So he's used the gun a few times before then for that. On the other

00:56:31.370 - 00:56:35.630

J.G.: hand though, I will say that there's also been a lot more support compared to

00:56:35.690 - 00:56:43.670

J.G.: Texas for differences. So like, I'm actually gay right now, so in Texas I

00:56:43.670 - 00:56:50.070

J.G.: actually don't receive that support, but here I do, which is quite amazing. So

00:56:50.070 - 00:56:54.070

J.G.: it's kind of weird, I will say, to go between Texas and Baltimore all the

00:56:54.070 - 00:56:54.450

J.G.: time.

00:56:54.450 - 00:56:57.870

K.D.: Yeah, definitely a different culture. For sure, navigating that.

00:56:57.870 - 00:56:59.890

J.G.: Yeah, it is truly a

00:56:59.890 - 00:57:12.930

J.G.: different culture. And then, let's see, although going back to question 19, not

00:57:12.930 - 00:57:16.610

J.G.: many social movements have actually impacted my time at Hopkins. I will say

00:57:16.610 - 00:57:21.930

J.G.: the biggest thing that actually impacted my time at Hopkins was when Trump cut

00:57:21.930 - 00:57:27.610

J.G.: back research grants because that, let's see,

00:57:32.790 - 00:57:37.890

J.G.: because I actually had a research job in mind during my junior

00:57:37.890 - 00:57:42.870

J.G.: year, then when those research cuts came in, it actually took that job away,

00:57:42.870 - 00:57:50.570

J.G.: simply because they couldn't pay me without such grants. That was until

00:57:50.570 - 00:57:55.490

J.G.: the JHU HOUR actually expanded their PURA grants and actually

00:57:55.490 - 00:58:00.630

J.G.: got it, so that was my way of staying here for the summer. I would

00:58:00.630 - 00:58:03.710

J.G.: say that was the biggest thing that actually impacted me at

00:58:03.710 - 00:58:12.290

J.G.: my time at Hopkins. Other than that, I can only speak to what else

00:58:12.290 - 00:58:19.070

J.G.: I've seen at Hopkins, like the protest against JHPD actually being formalized,

00:58:22.950 - 00:58:30.590

J.G.: the protest against the war in Gaza as well, and then similarly, just recently,

00:58:30.590 - 00:58:36.230

J.G.: the No Kings protest as well. I can only just speak to as to me

00:58:36.230 - 00:58:38.730

J.G.: seeing them, not so much taking a side.

00:58:39.770 - 00:58:51.890

K.D.: I'm going to stop our recording. Okay, we are back recording. Thinking locally,

00:58:51.890 - 00:58:56.670

K.D.: you've talked about kind of the cultural differences between Baltimore and

00:58:56.670 - 00:59:01.930

K.D.: Texas. What has your relationship been with Baltimore as a student? What has your

00:59:01.930 - 00:59:03.970

K.D.: impression of Baltimore been as a student?

00:59:03.970 - 00:59:09.530

J.G.: I would say,

00:59:09.530 - 00:59:14.730

J.G.: interestingly, my impression of Baltimore was that it's definitely a

00:59:14.730 - 00:59:19.690

J.G.: more dangerous city than I came from. San Antonio is not exactly a safe city per

00:59:19.690 - 00:59:27.690

J.G.: se, but I've never had so much like rave alerts of like a robbery or like an

00:59:27.690 - 00:59:44.810

J.G.: assault that was ever so close to me when I was in San Antonio. I will

00:59:44.810 - 00:59:50.730

J.G.: say, though, I do like Baltimore, though, for the fact that it is definitely a

00:59:50.730 - 00:59:59.370

J.G.: walkable city compared to San Antonio, which is a very drivable city. So I do

00:59:59.370 - 01:00:04.370

J.G.: like that aspect of being able to walk five minutes to get, you know, not so much

01:00:04.370 - 01:00:09.370

J.G.: groceries, just to buy some food or something like that. While in Texas,

01:00:10.170 - 01:00:15.430

J.G.: that walking could take about an hour to do if I didn't have a car.

01:00:22.110 - 01:00:29.730

K.D.: I wonder if there are any specific neighborhoods in Baltimore that you found

01:00:29.730 - 01:00:33.790

K.D.: you enjoyed spending time in or sticking closer to Homewood or any

01:00:34.890 - 01:00:39.550

K.D.: restaurants or museums, anything like that that you enjoyed spending time at?

01:00:39.550 - 01:00:44.110

J.G.: I actually like the neighborhoods around Hopkins. So that would be

01:00:44.110 - 01:00:48.790

J.G.: Remington with R. House, where R. House is one of my favorite – it's not so much

01:00:48.790 - 01:00:53.850

J.G.: a restaurant, but favorite places to go because I could choose between all

01:00:53.850 - 01:01:01.950

J.G.: different kinds of food, especially when I go there with my friends. In Hampden,

01:01:01.950 - 01:01:08.250

J.G.: I believe it's to the West, correct? Yeah. Hamden also has a bunch of

01:01:08.250 - 01:01:18.770

J.G.: different restaurants as well. My favorite one was the Charmery, which is the ice cream place.

01:01:18.770 - 01:01:21.620

J.G.: That's my favorite place there. Then to the East, what's that? What's the East neighborhood called?

01:01:21.620 - 01:01:25.730

K.D.: Charles Village.

01:01:25.730 - 01:01:27.330

J.G.: Yeah, Charles

01:01:27.330 - 01:01:32.430

J.G.: Village. In Charles Village, I love the different restaurants like Boz's

01:01:32.970 - 01:01:36.570

J.G.: Burgers, Kung Fu Tea is another one.

01:01:40.790 - 01:01:49.410

J.G.: Let's see. And then in the North with Guilford, let's see. There's not so much

01:01:49.410 - 01:01:53.570

J.G.: restaurants there, although Hopkins Market was always a reliable place to

01:01:53.570 - 01:01:54.590

J.G.: get something quick.

01:02:06.570 - 01:02:09.890

J.G.: Yeah, I will say the best part about Baltimore is the mere fact that I can

01:02:09.890 - 01:02:16.270

J.G.: walk anywhere and get food, although one of the things that is different compared

01:02:16.270 - 01:02:21.650

J.G.: to my hometown of San Antonio is that everything closes by like 11:00 or

01:02:21.650 - 01:02:31.990

J.G.: midnight, while in San Antonio, a lot of things stay open almost 24-7.

01:02:32.530 - 01:02:35.410

J.G.: Then another thing in Baltimore is that there's a lot more smaller businesses

01:02:35.410 - 01:02:41.110

J.G.: compared to San Antonio. In San Antonio, a lot of the smaller businesses

01:02:41.110 - 01:02:47.150

J.G.: are usually downtown in the center, while in Baltimore, the small businesses are

01:02:47.150 - 01:02:55.450

J.G.: kind of everywhere. Things that used to be close to me like

01:02:55.450 - 01:03:03.030

J.G.: McDonald's or Chick-fil-A are all far away. Those are just things that

01:03:03.030 - 01:03:07.270

J.G.: I've noticed, but I do like the fact of just being able to walk anywhere

01:03:07.270 - 01:03:07.950

J.G.: personally.

01:03:07.950 - 01:03:11.150

K.D.: Yeah, that's definitely convenient, but you're right. Yeah,

01:03:11.150 - 01:03:16.790

K.D.: sometimes grocery shopping, there are obviously grocery stores in the

01:03:16.790 - 01:03:21.310

K.D.: city, but certain ones you got to get out of the city to get to or

01:03:21.310 - 01:03:28.550

K.D.: certain fast foods as well. Thank you. Would you like to share your plans

01:03:28.550 - 01:03:33.510

K.D.: for the future or life after Hopkins, either academically, professionally, or

01:03:33.510 - 01:03:35.110

K.D.: personally?

01:03:35.110 - 01:03:40.130

J.G.: After Hopkins, I obviously want to become a doctor, MD-PhD. That's a

01:03:40.130 - 01:03:46.870

J.G.: faraway goal. I want to become either a

01:03:46.870 - 01:03:52.050

J.G.: psychiatrist or neurologist. Then I also want to do research in something

01:03:52.050 - 01:03:57.730

J.G.: called clinical neuroscience, which is this field of psychology but from a

01:03:57.730 - 01:04:02.570

J.G.: neuroscience background. It would be like what goes on in the

01:04:02.570 - 01:04:06.230

J.G.: physical brain of someone who's schizophrenic, things like that. That's

01:04:06.230 - 01:04:09.870

J.G.: far away. Immediately after Hopkins, I'm still trying to figure out what I

01:04:09.870 - 01:04:15.510

J.G.: want to do. I've actually been accepted into one graduate program

01:04:15.510 - 01:04:23.270

J.G.: in my hometown. The issue is I applied, but I applied because it

01:04:23.270 - 01:04:27.370

J.G.: was free, which isn't bad, it's just now I'm like, do I actually want to take this

01:04:27.370 - 01:04:36.770

J.G.: graduate program or do I want to work for money, because the graduate program

01:04:36.770 - 01:04:41.250

J.G.: doesn't pay. I actually have to pay them, obviously, for tuition and books and

01:04:41.250 - 01:04:47.830

J.G.: things like that. I'm trying to figure out if I actually want to do

01:04:47.830 - 01:04:53.770

J.G.: work, physical work and research, actually get paid in research, or get

01:04:53.770 - 01:04:58.630

J.G.: certified in something medical-related like a phlebotomist or MA or a medical

01:04:58.630 - 01:05:01.210

J.G.: assistant and then work there.

01:05:03.990 - 01:05:09.630

K.D.: Which grad program were you accepted into or what was the specific kind of program?

01:05:09.630 - 01:05:10.870

J.G.: It is

01:05:10.870 - 01:05:17.390

J.G.: the Masters of Science in Cell Systems and Anatomy at University of Texas

01:05:17.390 - 01:05:19.380

J.G.: Health Science Center at San Antonio.

01:05:19.380 - 01:05:19.430

K.D.: Cool.

01:05:19.430 - 01:05:23.350

J.G.: It's a long name. Anyway, I applied to

01:05:23.350 - 01:05:31.010

J.G.: that because it would prepare me for med school. It would

01:05:31.010 - 01:05:38.950

J.G.: also allow me to, let's see, it would also prepare me by giving me some

01:05:38.950 - 01:05:45.010

J.G.: more research experience. But I'm also worried about, similarly, money as well

01:05:45.010 - 01:05:56.290

J.G.: because I do love having disposable income at the same time. But also, I do

01:05:56.290 - 01:06:02.290

J.G.: want to save up and somehow gain experience before med school because

01:06:02.290 - 01:06:06.830

J.G.: due to my situations, I haven't been able to volunteer at a hospital because

01:06:09.310 - 01:06:14.450

J.G.: I would prefer I would get money from it, if that makes sense Similarly,

01:06:14.450 - 01:06:18.230

J.G.: volunteering at a hospital, I don't get that much patient interaction or

01:06:18.230 - 01:06:25.590

J.G.: medical interaction either. So I don't feel like it would prepare me

01:06:25.590 - 01:06:30.770

J.G.: enough for med school in a sense. Similarly, I don't volunteer all

01:06:30.770 - 01:06:35.350

J.G.: the time because I would prefer the money as well. I kind of do need

01:06:35.350 - 01:06:42.090

J.G.: the money. So that's actually one thing I have been trying to figure out is

01:06:42.090 - 01:06:46.330

J.G.: whether or not I should accept going to the graduate program because I'm

01:06:46.330 - 01:06:51.830

J.G.: most likely going to go back to San Antonio either way. But it's like, should I

01:06:51.830 - 01:06:59.970

J.G.: take the graduate program where it's a full-time position? I could get a part-time

01:06:59.970 - 01:07:07.250

J.G.: job like I do here, but would it be better for me to work rather than

01:07:07.250 - 01:07:08.730

J.G.: to do another degree?

01:07:08.730 - 01:07:14.750

K.D.: And that was going to be my next question. Thinking long-term

01:07:14.750 - 01:07:17.140

K.D.: about – seems like moving back to San Antonio is definitely in the cards.

01:07:17.140 - 01:07:20.010

J.G.: Yeah.

01:07:20.010 - 01:07:21.930

K.D.: The

01:07:23.410 - 01:07:28.170

K.D.: next question is, I find it's a pretty simple question, but can be hard

01:07:28.170 - 01:07:33.030

K.D.: to answer, understandably. It's just kind of after the years you've spent here, how

01:07:33.030 - 01:07:34.670

K.D.: would you summarize your time at Hopkins?

01:07:34.670 - 01:07:38.570

J.G.: I would say amazing, because I

01:07:38.570 - 01:07:43.630

J.G.: would not have been able to do the things had I stayed in San Antonio. I

01:07:43.630 - 01:07:47.790

J.G.: would not have been able to work at the Hopkins Hospital. I would not have been

01:07:47.790 - 01:07:54.130

J.G.: able to meet amazing professors, professors that are passionate

01:07:54.130 - 01:07:57.910

J.G.: in what they do, so much so that if you don't understand something, they'll

01:07:57.970 - 01:08:06.010

J.G.: know, really, "Let me help you understand.” Truly. There's so much

01:08:06.010 - 01:08:09.870

J.G.: academic support and also financial aid support as well.

01:08:17.810 - 01:08:21.990

J.G.: I would say my time at Hopkins has been just memorable

01:08:23.430 - 01:08:29.150

J.G.: because of all the experiences that I have had in both my academic and also

01:08:29.150 - 01:08:29.550

J.G.: social.

01:08:29.550 - 01:08:37.150

K.D.: Overall, would you recommend Hopkins to other limited-income

01:08:37.150 - 01:08:45.090

K.D.: students? You've talked about kind of financial aid benefit being critical. Is

01:08:45.090 - 01:08:48.210

K.D.: there any advice you would give to future Hopkins students?

01:08:48.210 - 01:08:50.450

J.G.: I would

01:08:50.450 - 01:09:00.510

J.G.: definitely recommend Hopkins to other limited-income students. I can't speak

01:09:00.510 - 01:09:03.990

J.G.: for the first-generation aspect because I'm not first-generation, so I don't want

01:09:03.990 - 01:09:07.350

J.G.: to speak for them, but I would definitely recommend Hopkins to limited-income

01:09:07.350 - 01:09:12.050

J.G.: because any time I had issues with paying bills or paying

01:09:12.050 - 01:09:17.130

J.G.: something, I could speak to my financial advisor and they'll be like, "

01:09:17.130 - 01:09:19.850

J.G.: Well, here's some steps you could take. You can apply for a budget change. You

01:09:19.850 - 01:09:24.630

J.G.: could do this. You could take out loans." I will say one of the best aspects about

01:09:24.630 - 01:09:29.250

J.G.: Hopkins compared – for limited-income is definitely, at least from my case, I've

01:09:29.250 - 01:09:33.890

J.G.: never had to take out a loan once. So it's looking like I'm going to be able to

01:09:33.890 - 01:09:39.090

J.G.: graduate Hopkins loan-free, which was not so much my parents' concern, but it was

01:09:39.090 - 01:09:44.010

J.G.: definitely my concern. So I'm really happy about that. And so I would recommend

01:09:44.010 - 01:09:46.550

J.G.: Hopkins to other limited- income students.

01:09:46.550 - 01:09:49.830

K.D.: Is there any advice you would

01:09:55.910 - 01:09:56.350

K.D.: give?

01:09:56.350 - 01:10:04.310

J.G.: I would say if you're going to find a part-time job, find a part-time job you

01:10:04.310 - 01:10:09.830

J.G.: love or you like at the very least. Don't find a job that you just want to get

01:10:09.830 - 01:10:19.510

J.G.: money from because you are going to have to most likely be working with whoever

01:10:19.510 - 01:10:26.110

J.G.: you work with for probably several years as you try to pay your way through

01:10:26.110 - 01:10:30.930

J.G.: Hopkins. So find one you love. I love working in the mailroom. And no lie, if I

01:10:30.930 - 01:10:34.930

J.G.: go back to San Antonio and I don't have a job offer from any research place, I

01:10:34.930 - 01:10:39.790

J.G.: would still be happy to work at USPS or UPS because I don't know why

01:10:39.790 - 01:10:45.550

J.G.: working in the mailroom, I just love working in the mailroom. So

01:10:45.550 - 01:10:48.950

J.G.: it has showed me the fact that I do like working with mail, which is

01:10:48.950 - 01:10:54.510

J.G.: interesting because I'm here speaking about studying Alzheimer's

01:10:54.510 - 01:10:59.850

J.G.: and schizophrenia and also working in USPS. Anyway, so the advice would be

01:10:59.850 - 01:11:04.510

J.G.: find a part-time job you love or like.

01:11:04.510 - 01:11:09.570

K.D.: Well, thank you so

01:11:09.570 - 01:11:13.650

K.D.: much for interviewing with me today. I know especially this time of year and

01:11:13.650 - 01:11:18.130

K.D.: looking towards graduation, everyone's really busy, so I really appreciate your

01:11:18.130 - 01:11:22.310

K.D.: time. Is there anything else you would like to add before the interview is over,

01:11:22.310 - 01:11:27.830

K.D.: any questions that weren't in our list, any aspect of your Hopkins

01:11:27.830 - 01:11:31.230

K.D.: experience that we didn't touch on that you'd like to talk about?

01:11:31.230 - 01:11:45.670

J.G.: I guess the

01:11:45.670 - 01:11:49.570

J.G.: only thing I would say to other Hopkins students is do go to

01:11:49.570 - 01:11:55.230

J.G.: the events. I think all the events at Hopkins,

01:11:55.230 - 01:12:02.770

J.G.: they don't cost anything to go. And I would also say don't be afraid to go to

01:12:02.770 - 01:12:09.930

J.G.: events as well because at least for me, they are an easy source of food all the

01:12:09.930 - 01:12:17.510

J.G.: time. So I've gone to many events just for food. So if you're ever struggling

01:12:17.510 - 01:12:25.410

J.G.: with food, just go to events. Take advantage of your meal swipes because

01:12:25.410 - 01:12:29.210

J.G.: they are a use it or lose it situation. So if you're at the end of the week,

01:12:29.210 - 01:12:33.210

J.G.: you're about to lose a meal swipe just because you can't figure out what to use

01:12:33.210 - 01:12:39.030

J.G.: it on, just simply like grab food or something. And also use up all your

01:12:39.050 - 01:12:42.340

J.G.: dining dollars as well. I think that's everything I have to say.

01:12:42.340 - 01:12:45.630

K.D.: Awesome. That's great practical advice. So thank you. All right. I'm going to end our recording.
